Lighthouse Foundation painting

Lighthouse Foundation's Mums'N Bubs Program supports a group of young mums (15-22 years) and their babies living in Melbourne who are victims of/or at risk of long term homelessness and abuse. The Mums'N Bubs Program aims to break the vicious cycle of long term homelessness and abuse by providing to the young mums and their infants: a safe home, a sense of family, live in carers who act as role models, medical and psychological treatment as needed and much more. It ensures that the mums bond with their babies and develop a healthy family framework in which to raise their infants, as well as creating connections to the wider community.
My best friend Nat is on the committee for this wonderful charity and asked if I would donate a painting for their Auction they have at a lunch the raises money for the program, special speaker this year being Governor General Quentin Bryce!
I'm not the only one donating, some fine members of IA are also donating, thank you to them.

Well my Chair-ity chair is finished and will now go off to 'The Porch'.

Thanks to everyone that has supported me this year with purchasing my artwork and giving me great feedback, it is always greatly appreciated. I will be continuing to work on the Chair-ity auction chair and a few other paintings over the break.

Pink Chair-ity Auction Project Stage 3-"Some finer details emerging!""

Well it took me a little while to get back to my chair with family needs amongst some illustration needs, but I'm there!
I have been adding some details to my blossoms! My idea is to have a spring feel to the chair, something happy and with a calm feeling about it.
I also wanted to have the pink theme as part of the Breast Cancer cause which led me to blossoms!
The blossoms are falling through holes at the top of the chair, on the front and the back. On the arms of the chair I have my favorite little girl characters with my fav little birds sitting in theirs hands, almost like they are being offered to the sitter in the chair. I'm using some Japanese paper for collage parts that I absolutely love to use, it has a gorgeous texture and lovely print.
This is the 3rd stage for me and the next will be adding more detail.

Pink Chair-ity Auction Project Stage 2-"The Design"

Well hi there again, reporting on the 2nd stage of The Porch Chair-ity Auction (see previous post)
Over the weekend with the background colour done, which i decided should be greenish being a garden chair and it will also work in with the other colours I'm going to use, i started on my design!
I have posted photos of the progression over the weekend particularly Sunday which was a gorgeous day! The sun was out, washing had been done and was blowing around on the line, the bathroom had been cleaned, the dog had been washed, there had been bacon and eggs consumed and all was good - that meant time for my favorite thing - painting!
So with my daughter on hand for her valuable advice and my nice clean dog at the ready off i went......... and it was fun!
I must say i am really enjoying this project, i hope i can do it justice!

I am also very excited to say that my illustrator friend and colleague Sonia Kretschmar has also been added to the list of artists for this project!

Illustrators Australia 16th Annual 9x5 exhibition

It's on again for 2011, the 16th annual 9x5 exhibition presented by IA
This year the them is 'rapture' and this is my piece

My piece will be amongst about 90 other original illustrations drawn, painted, collaged onto 9x5 inch pieces of wood.

This year it's to be held once again at the FAB Space 39, Lvl 2, 39 Little Collins st, Melbourne
OPENING NIGHT: Friday 14th October from 6pm, this includes a great auction of the works, drinks and mingling with illustrators and like creatives, then the gallery open on the Sunday form 10am-3pm

So yes only a 2 day show so make sure you don't miss it.
All pieces will on on view very soon on the IA site

On the Saturday 15th October, IA is presenting a one day seminar "New avenues for illustrators" if you are interested in going to this you must register by Oct 4th, so register or read more about it here

Pink Chair-ity Auction Project Stage 1-"The Sealer"

A couple of weeks ago I was approached by a furniture company in Melbourne The Porch to take part in a Chair-ity Auction with them and with all proceeds going to National Breast Cancer Foundation.
I must admit that i do get asked alot to donate artworks, i do when i can and to what i think are worthy causes (most of them are) but it is hard to donate to everything! But my first thought here was YES, a week before my cousin was diagnosed with an aggressive type of breast cancer (which she is currently undergoing treatment for), and i have had several friends that have had it and won their battles thankfully, but i know many do not. Of course it's not only breast cancer that is the problem - it's all cancers, and this is just one charity out of many - we should all do what we can!
This is something that can happen to any of us at anytime and I want to do my bit to help to fight and to help further research.
Other artists so far that are donating are:
Peter Russell Clarke, Jamie Daddo, Suzie Wilks, Graeme Base, Jane Sinclair and Miranda Scoczek.
The chairs will be exhibited at Fed Square and then tour around our beautiful Melbourne for a bit then they will be auctioned on ebay!

I am going to post my progression through the blog starting today with Stage 1, hope you will take the journey with me, have a bit of fun and know that we are helping a very worthy cause...................

Well Julie from The Porch (an extremely lovely lady) brought my chair to me in a box which my partner and I assembled at home, i did make him read the instructions! I have to say this chair is amazingly comfy and immediately he was thinking of where he would put it until i reminded him that is was to be painted and auctioned :) Looks like we will be investing in a couple of them later down the track :)

I asked for my chair raw, in hindsight probably should have got it pre-painted, but today I sealed the chair to stop resin and tannins seeping through the paint, after one coat i thought it looked pretty good until my partner wandered past and told me to put another coat on! (he is a painter & decorator so i decided he would know more about this than myself) - after the 2nd coat i sanded and it looked grand! I am pleased now I have gone through this process as i have gotten to know my chair quite well. Also lucky for me my little daughter Abby was on hand to offer me advice :) It is now ready to be worked on!

Well..... i thought i would share.....
The exhibition has finished now and I'm am so happy to say that the wonderful Wyreena gallery gave me lots of exposure, Eastern FM radio, Channel 31 and 2 local papers, I sold 17 paintings out of 24 and have had lots of great feedback and positive thoughts sent my way, thank you everyone that came along and supported me and to those that came in on the Saturdays to have a chat, and those that chose to buy my paintings, I hope they are being enjoyed in their new homes :)
- it was a wonderful experience and I'll be seeing you next October 2012 when i return again to the Wyreena Gallery, Croydon

Ballarat Writer's and Illustrators Festival

If you are heading off to this festival on Saturday 3rd Sept, I might see you there.
Fellow illustrator Kim Fleming and myself are heading there for the day to see what's happening and to hear some very interesting info, it should be a very cool day and i don't mean weather wise, although it can get pretty windy in the 'Rat'!

Well with the date looming closer to my Wyreena exhibition i thought i would post some photos!
For details of the exhibition see the last blog post - and for all my friends that are no where near Croydon, it's not as far as you think (although i did think so too originally!) It's only about 25 mins, straight down Eastern Freeway, turn onto Ringwood bypass, then onto Maroondah highway, follow then turn right at either Croydon Rd or Dorset Rd, hope you can make it to Opening night, if not I'm also at the gallery every Saturday through August, I'll also be on Eastern FM radio (98.1) and also Channel 31 (will have to post when this will be) - all a bit scary but very good all the same!

Well we are heading off to Bali for a short and refreshing break next week.
I can't wait, I am REALLY looking forward to taking along my sketch pad and taking in the beautiful gardens and flowers while lazing about of course!
I am hoping for some inspirations that will help in finishing off the paintings for my August exhibition at Wyreena Gallery,
It's called "All the seasons" and I hope that i can add a little of my traveling to the last paintings

Whow, well it was amazing evening on Monday for me to meet one of the most highly regarded Australian illustrators in the world!
Jeff Fisher kindly agreed to do a talk for IA members - his work was amazing and truly inspiring, thank you Jeff!
We were lucky to grab him while he was on holiday from France (where he lives).

How very exciting and well deserved, fingers crossed for the 15th April when the winner is announced, her painting of Cassandra Golds (author) will be touring in the Archibald exhibition around the country! WOW!

Well, what an amazing exhibition, I went along to this with my 4 year old daughter Abby, and my good friend and wonderful illustrator Kim Fleming, it was so fantastic for us as illustrators to see all these names that we have loved and been inspired by over the years. Well, now that the St Vincent's exhib has finished I am now about to start work on my next Solo show, this will be held next August at Wyreena Gallery in Croydon.

This is a beautiful little gallery in a Tudor style building surrounded by lovely gardens and the conservatory cafe.
It seems a long way off at the moment but painting takes time and I'm also in between illustrations as well, so the more time the better! On with the painting...........

I have been working on my own book for a few years now on and off, in my 'spare' time.
I am hoping one day to publish it but it is difficult to get your own book out there!

'Greens' Art & Auction dinner

I am very chuffed to be asked to donate an artwork to the Australian Greens (victoria), Inner South' Art & Dinner Auction, this is to help raise funds for the election of the candidates in some inner south seats, these candidates will be the first in Australia to submit a new policy giving animals rights, which is my main reason for saying yes, some of the other names that have donated are - Leigh Hutfield, Claire Layman, Carol Batchelor,Rona Green, Shaun Tan, Jennie Rosenbaum, Marte Newcombe, Angony and Matt Irwin. Those in attendance will be art buyers, candidates and others so I'm quite pleased to have my work amongst this wonderful group of artists on show and auctioned, cross fingers!
Above is the original painting I have donated, it's acrylic and collage on canvas, I hope it may bring in some bucks for them!

St Vincent' Exhibition 2010

I have been lucky enough to be asked back this year to exhibit at St Vincent's hospital in Melbourne, it will once again be a spring exhib in October, I am currently furiously painting away in my studio! I hope to give a happy, light spring feel while painting the images I love, using acrylic and collage.

IA exhibition in Northcote 18th JUNE

Illustrators Australia is hosting the A3 Print show in Melbourne as part of the Northern Exposure Festival in June.
The show originally started in Sydney by the IA members of NSW and now we have traveled it down to Melbourne!
So come along to the Opening night on Friday 18th June, for nibbles, drinks and a chance too pick up a bargain with prints going at $120 each.
The exhibition is then open on Sat & Sun from 10am-4pm

I have a solo exhibition at St Vincent's hospital for the month of October/early November
It was a fantastic opportunity given to me by the curator, Monique, it's a bright room and being a hospital and spring I decided to give it a 'Spring' feel
All are for sale ranging from $150-$680

Have just finished my 9x5 for the Illustrators Australia 9x5 exhibition.

I will update you on the when & where of this, but it's always a great opening, also I have nearly finished my paintings for the St Vincent's exhibition which will be for the month of October, will let you know about that too!

Well hello everyone,
The Fairfield art show was a huge success, well done to all their commitee again.
I was very lucky to have sold my 2 paintings and would like to thank the great people that I met that bought them, I hope you will get lots of enjoyment out of them, I know myself I love to buy artwork (when finances allow!) It's such a great feeling to hang it on the wall and see it all the time.
I'm getting some images ready for the printers for the solo exhibition in October
(ST Vincents Hospital Gallery in Victoria Pde, East Melbourne) It's a month long exhib, a bit scary to think people will scrutinise for a whole month but it is an exciting thing to work towards.
Anyway cheerio for now :)

Hello and Welcome to my new Blog page
I have just started blogging so i hope I don't let the serious bloggers down, and i
write something interesting.
I am currently working on some paintings for a solo exhibition in October at St Vincents Hospital Gallery in Melbourne. Today it has been difficult to get to the canvas I have had set up in the studio as my 3 year old has had other plans!
OWLS, yep - the hoo hoo kind, that's my interest at the moment.
If your around the Fairfield area drop into the Community ARt show held at the Primary School on the weekend 1st Aug, Saturday night (opening 5-8pm) or Sunday (family day), I have 2 paintings in but much better than that it is alot of fun and you may pick up a bargain from a local artis, not just paintings but also mosaics and jewellery!
